Awaken To One Alliance
serving as a catalyst for spiritual and social change
What is the modern mystic? Recently I was in a spirituality class and the teacher asked us to share a mystical experience with another student. My first thoughts were, ‘I’ve never seen God in a burning bush or I never walked on hot coals without getting burnt.’ In that moment I realized I did not fully grasp what a mystical experience was.
- As I listened to my classmates share their experiences, I heard incidents about communicating with departed love ones, intuitive insights, healings, out-of-body experiences and even psychic phenomenon. I could relate to all these, though I would have never considered them mystical. I realized I had much to learn.
- My perception of mystical experiences had been influenced by my views of medieval mystics; those recluses, who prayed for hours on end, took vows of poverty, chastity and fasted for long periods.
- Part of my spiritual practices and walk in life includes conversing with God. My dialogue with Spirit isn’t always an inner dialogue, though it can be. In addition to listening for the higher call, I watch for messages from God through synchronicity, serendipity and miracles; all of which I call Lifesigns. Spirit sends us messages or signs everyday to help answer our questions and provide guidance. While I consider Lifesigns a spiritual practice, I had not considered them to be mystical, until now.
- In “Entering the Castle” Caroline Myss writes, “Most people living ordinary lives would not consider themselves mystic, because they don’t understand what a mystic is.” I realized I wasn’t alone and was encouraged to explore mysticism further.
- According to Earnest Holmes, “A mystic is one who intuitively perceives Truth and, without mental process, arrives at spiritual realization.”
- The mystic lives from a place of unseen Truth and discerns its connection with God. That spiritual realization is oneness. The mystic lives from a place of Jesus’ words, “I and my Father are one.” A mystic recognizes that there is one life, one energy, one mind, and that everything consists of this ONE God essence. The mystic sees the divine in every person, every animal, every plant, and every inanimate object because they live from a place where God is all there is.
- While many mentally embrace the concept of oneness, the mystic embraces Truth with heart and soul. You can study these metaphysical and spiritual concepts for years and cerebrally understand them and believe them, but if you don’t open your heart and get your mind out of its own way, the soul won’t crack the veil and you won’t see the light.
- What is a modern mystic? A mystic is a person called to know God at a deeper level. Know this – you are an evolving mystic. If you are reading topics on mysticism, oneness and God, you are clearly searching. A person desiring to have direct dialogue with Spirit is a developing mystic.
- An inciting occurrence you may have experienced is a yearning to understand your purpose in life. Asking questions like, “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” or “How am I meant to serve?” are indicative of calling God to deepen your relationship with Source.
- To be a modern mystic you don’t need a special degree, be a theologian, or a minister. You do not have to vow chastity, poverty, or suffer. You do not have to live a reclusive life.
- A modern mystic strives to live a life of compassion, inclusivity and love for all. The mystic may even falter a bit, but always takes responsibility for both positive and negative actions, thoughts and spoken words. The modern mystic yearns to deepen their relationship with God and is willing to explore the higher vision Spirit has for their life.
- Not everyone chooses to explore being a mystic. One may say they want it, but they know there may be sacrifices, or their priorities may change. This creates doubt. I remember a time when advancing my career was more important than exploring spirituality. For some people – things change, for others – the status quo is not so bad.
- When you come to the realization that your purpose for walking this planet goes beyond the desire to attain a certain title, social status, wealth or assets, you’ve tamed your ego. When you’re fueled with passion to uncover your true purpose, and you realize you’re here to serve, you’re well on your way to living the modern mystic.
- Your purpose is needed today more than ever. There is no coincidence that you are walking this planet at this time. You are needed. Your purpose is to shine – to uncover that higher calling and serve – to recognize that God lives within you as you.
- What is the modern mystic? The mystics are those individuals who choose to search for purpose and serve their calling. They are those spiritual beings shining brilliantly and inspiring others to do the same. They are the ones who help raise the consciousness of the planet and catalyze the spiritual evolution of humankind.
- Thank you for spreading your light.
